A man has been sentenced to two years in prison for allegedly “pandering” to foreigners at a holiday resort.
The court in Sibong district in southern Thailand was told that the 52-year-old, who has not been named, had been at the popular resort of Klong Phuong in October and November last year.
The prosecution alleged that the man, who worked as a hotel worker, befriended a woman from Indonesia and then had sex with her.
He was arrested on December 13 after an employee reported that he was doing the same thing to the woman.
The man’s lawyer argued that the defendant had acted “in a very serious manner” and that he had been “hurt and humiliated”.
The man was also ordered to pay a fine of 50,000 baht ($14,700).
The court was told the man had made “bizarre claims” to authorities and that his wife had “disappeared”.
The court heard that the suspect had been working in the resort for about two years and was employed by the Thai Tourism Board (THB) as a seasonal worker.
Thailand has a population of more than 40 million, of which about 10 million are foreigners.
